Sweet Feed - Yuck!

One of the biggest culprits in dis-ease in horses is manufactured feeds. Not to put too fine a point on it but the great majority of horse grains and pet foods are made up of agri-waste. Most of the "grain" (and I use this term loosely) in your standard sweet feed is what was left over after making other products for humans.

Corn meal is usually left over after removing corn oil Unfortunately, they don't just squeeze corn and get corn oil (like they do with peanuts). They have to fractionate it by soaking the ground corn in a petroleum distolate. The meal that is left no longer has the fat needed to balance the protein in the corn - AND - it is full of petroleum residue. They follow the same process for soy beans, etc.

Start reading labels! Purina doesn't even tell you what type of grain they are using any longer. All they have to put is the percentage of protein, fat, etc. What exactly is a grain byproduct anyway?

And now that the grain has had that expensive oil removed - they have to add fat back in to balance the feed. What are they using? Animal fat and deep fryer waste (also listed as animal-vegetable fat product). Now I don't know about your horse but mine is a true herbavore. He doesn't even have a gall bladder for producing bile to break down saturated animal fats. Animal fat in herbavore food is simply a bad idea.

Of course, to keep all that fractionated fat from going rancid so that their "feed" can have a two or three year shelf life - they add preservatives. Some of the most popular are BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin. BHA and BHT are know carginogens - Ethoxyquin is better known by a different name - AGENT ORANGE!!! No wonder we are now seeing a large increase in the number of horses (and dogs and cats) with cancer!

So what do we use instead? Whole, tested chemical-free or organic grains. I like Dynamite's Complete Pelleted Grain Ration but I also use other organic grain sources when I can find them. When you feed whole grains it is amazing how little you have to give to maintain weight. My client's report large warm-blood dressage horses in heavy training needing only about 5 - 6 cups per day. Thats CUPS not POUNDS! So I may pay more for a bag of better grain - but it lasts much longer.

Hi- While I agree with many of the points in your article, I must correct you on one. You state that the horse has no gall bladder to produce bile to break down saturated fats. This is only partly true. Though the horse has no gallbladder, the gallbladder is a storage area for bile, which is produced in the liver. The horse actually secretes huge amounts (several liters) of bile every day directly into the small intestine. This makes them one of the most efficient digesters of fats, including saturated ones.

Hi, I have a VERY expensive horse and were i board him they feed Farmers Best Equi-Pell Senior with animal veggie fat product will that truly give him cancer if so what else will it give him...can it kill him??????? Please help!!!!

.... Unfortunately Farmer's Best does not offer ingredient lists for their products on their website and I am unfamiliar with their Equi-Pell Senior product. The animal-vegetable fat product is, in my opinion, pretty nasty stuff. Not so much because it by itself will cause cancer - but because horses cannot utilize animal fats - they are herbivores. I would seach for a source of whole, tested-chemical free grains like Dynamite's Complete Pelleted Ration so that you feed less grain with much more nutritional value. I would also recommend helping to cleanse your horse's liver and kidneys with Amazon Herbs' Envirozon to flush out any chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT or Ethoxyquin.
